What is hypnobirthing?
Hypnotherapy for childbirth is basically teaching the mother a deep form of self relaxation. This benefits us enormously in labour, as when we are relaxed we allow our bodies to function efficiently and as it was designed to. Unfortunately, our current society encourages women to grow up feeling fearful of birth. Whether we notice it consciously or not, we are exposed to years of hearing stories from other women describing how awful it is, movies portraying waters breaking and being rushed off in an ambulance, TV shows displaying women screaming in pain....
All this information gets filed away and stored in the subconscious part of the brain. Unfortunately, this often means that when labour does begin, our subconscious has a fearful expectation so it activates our fight or flight response. This releases adrenaline and cortisol (our stress hormone) resulting in all our energy resources being directed to our arms and legs ready to fight or run away, exactly the opposite or what we want! Without enough energy resources our uterus doesn't contract as efficiently as it should which creates tension, and it is this tension that then creates pain.
Hypnotherapy helps build positive templates and expectations in the subconscious part of the brain. This means that when we do go into labour, we can remain calm and relaxed, releasing oxytocin (our "love" hormone) which encourages contractions and we can produce beta-endorphins, which act as our own natural analgesia.
Benefits of hypnobirthing can include;
~ Feeling calm, confident and in control throughout labour
~ Shorter labour
~ Reduced or eliminated need for medicated pain relief
~ Reduced chance of medical intervention
~ Increased endorphins which act as your own natural analgesia
~ Release fears or anxiety surrounding birth or a previous birth experience
~ Birth partner having an active role
~ Babies tend to be calmer
~ Babies tend to feed and sleep easier
~ Relaxation skills that can be applied to all areas of your life!

How many sessions you require will depend on various factors such as your general anxiety levels and how much practise you put in (listening to a relaxation cd at home and breathing techniques), but on average most women require 4 sessions.
