What is Hypnotherapy and how does it work?
Our complex human brain is often compared to a giant iceberg. On the surface is the conscious part accounting for approximately 10% of our behaviour. Underneath the surface lies the subconscious, this part of the brain accounts for a whopping 90% of our behaviour. Much of the subconscious behaviour we have learnt is beneficial to us, for example slamming the brakes on to avoid a car accident or putting your hands out when you fall. However, we can also store behavioural patterns that we don't desire, such as overeating when we're stressed or having a panic attack before boarding an aeroplane.
Hypnotherapy uses the very powerful state of trance to bring both parts of the brain together to focus on the same objective. This is a very natural state to be in, much like the feeling just before you fall asleep, but allows us access to the subconscious with whatever objectives we have decided upon in the conscious part of the brain. This enables us to create the positive changes in our life that we desire.
Solution Focused Therapy
In conjunction with hypnotherapy, I practise Solution Focused Brief Therapy. Using elements of CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and NLP (neurolinguistic programming) SFBT is a highly effective psychotherapeutic tool which, as the name suggests, focuses on creating solutions rather than solving problems. This means we won't be dwelling on past traumatic experiences or looking for what caused the problem. Instead I can help you envisage the future that you would like and then we make small steps to achieve it. I believe it is important that therapy should be a fun and enjoyable experience!

Is it like on the telly?
No, stage hypnosis is for entertainment purposes and is very different from clinical hypnotherapy. You are in control at all times and can't be made to do anything the conscious part of your brain hasn't decided you want to do. So although clinical hypnotherapy is very powerful for stopping smoking or biting your nails etc, you won't walk out clucking like a chicken for a week.
Will I meet you first?
Yes, I offer a friendly and informal initial consultation lasting approximately forty five minutes. In this appointment I will take a brief history from you and discuss how you would like therapy to help. I will explain how the brain works and what hypnotherapy can do. You will be given a free relaxation CD to take away and listen to before you go to sleep which will help maximise your therapy.
This is an ideal opportunity for you to ask me any questions you have and to decide if I am the right hypnotherapist for you. This consultation is free of charge and you are under no obligation to continue if you wish not to.
What can I expect from each session?
Each subsequent session will last approximately 55 minutes and will start with a review of your week, focusing on the positives. We will then recap how the mind works and begin building solutions that you want to achieve.
The final part of the session is the actual hypnosis which is the most relaxing and enjoyable part! It feels much like daydreaming and you will remain in control at all times.
How many sessions will it take?
As with all therapies, this is variable per client and dependent on your commitment to change, however as a rough guide, I would suggest for fears, specific phobias and habits 2-3 sessions, anxiety and stress related problems approximately 6-10 sessions and stopping smoking is a one off session lasting approximately 90mins (please note no initial consultation is required for stopping smoking clients)
Where will the sessions take place?
I practise from a discreet and private consulting room in my garden, so there is no need to worry about bumping into someone you know in a clinic waiting room!
